Premier League unveil official match ball for 2018/19 season

The Premier League has unveiled the official match ball for the 2018/19 season.

Named ‘The Merlin’, the ball marks Nike’s 18th season as the official supplier for the Premier League and will be used for the first time when the new season gets under way on the weekend of 11 August.

Nike’s new design is ‘the most advanced yet,’ according to the Premier League’s website, and will be the first ball ever to have just four panels.

“Where there were once 32 panels to a ball, the new Nike Merlin will have just four, a world-first,” says a Premier League press release.

“Fewer panels mean fewer seams, eliminating hard spots and opening the ball up to more sweet spots for Premier League players to shoot or pass with more accuracy.

“The ball’s colours, a mix of white, black, purple, blue and yellow, will help players identify more easily which way it is spinning, when it will drop, and how fast it is travelling.

“This will give them crucial milliseconds to decide what magic they will apply next.”

The fixture list for the 2018/19 season will be announced on June 14, the same day as the World Cup begins in Russia.

What is Ransomware – 15 Easy Steps To Protect Your System

May 12th 2017 saw the biggest ever cyber attack in Internet history (yes, bigger than the Dyn DDoS).  A ransomware named WannaCry stormed through the web, with the damage epicenter being in Europe.

WannaCry leveraged a vulnerability in Windows OS, first discovered by the NSA, and then publicly revealed to the world by the Shadow Brokers.

In the first few hours, 200,000 machines were infected. Big organizations such as Renault or the NHS were struck and crippled by the attack.

But this massive wave wasn’t the only one. A few weeks later, a ransomware strain resembling Petya started spreading around Europe, affecting companies, Ukrainian institutions and banks, and even the even the radiation monitoring system at Chernobyl.

Ransomware has been a growing trend for the past two years, and this is just a culmination, a grand reveal to the wider world of just how big of a threat it is. But we’ve been writing about this for a while now.

Some time ago, a delivery guy walked into our office. While we signed for the package, he realized that we work in cyber security and asked:

My entire music collection from the past 11 years got encrypted by ransomware.

Is there anything I can do about it?

They’re asking for $500 for the decryption key.

My first thought was: I hope he has a data backup. So I had to ask:

Do you have a backup?

He looked down and said a bitter „no”.

This scenario is unfolding right now somewhere in the world. Maybe even in your city or neighborhood.

In this very moment, someone is clicking a link in a spam email or activating macros in a malicious document.

In a few seconds, all their data will be encrypted and they’ll have just a few days to pay hundreds of dollars to get it back. Unless they have a backup, which most people don’t.

World Cup 2018: Mohamed Salah ‘confident’ of playing for Egypt despite Champions League final injury

Mohamed Salah
Salah scored 44 goals for Liverpool last season

Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah says he is “confident” of playing in the World Cup after suffering a shoulder injury in the Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.

Salah, 25, left the pitch in Kiev in tears after a first-half challenge with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

“Your love and support will give me the strength I need,” said Salah.

Egypt play their first game of the World Cup in Russia on 15 June against Uruguay in Yekaterinburg.

After the game in Kiev, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp described the injury as “really serious” and it did not “look good” on the Liverpool website.

But the Egyptian FA tweeted that Salah’s X-ray showed he had a “sprain in the shoulder ligaments” and that it was “optimistic” he would be fit for Russia.

Salah, who scored 44 goals for his club last season, tried to carry on after the tangle with Ramos in the 26th minute.

However, he was forced to leave the pitch a few minutes later and was replaced by Adam Lallana.

World Cup 2018: Marcus Rashford can star for England – Ashley Young

Marcus Rashford and Gareth Southgate
England boss Gareth Southgate (right) has said young players like Marcus Rashford (left) do not represent a “gamble” at the World Cup

Marcus Rashford has the potential to “set the world alight” and could use the World Cup to showcase his talent, says England team-mate Ashley Young.

Manchester United forward Rashford, 20, is in Gareth Southgate’s squad with club-mate Young, for the tournament which begins on 14 June.

“It’s the World Cup and it could be his stage to show everybody how far he’s come since his debut,” said Young, 32.

“He produces at United and will be a major player for us at the World Cup.”

Rashford became the youngest English player to score on his international debut in 2016.

He has featured in his country’s past eight fixtures under Southgate, who has chosen the third-youngest squad England have sent to a World Cup.

“He’s going to cope really well,” Young added. “I’ve said it from the time I saw him in the youth team – he’s got a massive future ahead of him. He’s a fantastic player and if he keeps going the way he is, he’ll set the world alight.

“If you look at the goals he has scored on how many different debuts, it just shows he steps up in the big games.”

‘I’m still an attacker’

Ashley Young (right) trained with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Raheem Sterling and England captain Harry Kane on Monday

Only Young, Chelsea defender Gary Cahill and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy are over 30 in England’s squad, which does not contain a player to have won a game at a World Cup.

Young’s inclusion comes despite him not being involved in the squad during the qualifying campaign. He ended four years out of the international set-up when he featured in November’s friendly draw with Brazil.

In his time away from England, he has adapted to a change in role after switching from winger to wing-back at Old Trafford.

He was in impressive form last season, playing in 38 United matches, but he says that, despite his versatility, he “would rather be attacking than defending”.

Young said: “I don’t pretend, I still see myself as an attacker, especially the way that we play with the full-backs or wing-backs high up.

“Different managers play different formations. I think I am one of those players who has a good footballing brain. Wherever the manager calls on me to play I will give 100% for the England shirt and go to do as well as I can.”

England’s key World Cup dates
2 June v Nigeria (friendly)
7 June v Costa Rica (friendly)
12 June Squad leaves for Russia
18 June v Tunisia (opening group game)
24 June v Panama (second group game)
28 June v Belgium (final group game)

‘We can go a long way in Russia’

England are preparing for friendlies against Nigeria at Wembley on Saturday and Costa Rica at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground five days later.

Southgate’s side will then play their first World Cup game against Tunisia on 18 June, four days after the tournament begins in Russia.

Cahill believes England’s youthful squad possesses more experience than age suggests as a result of players’ club exploits and Young insists the “togetherness” Southgate has harnessed should not be underestimated.

“The squad can achieve as much as it wants to achieve,” said Young.

“We’ve got a fantastic group of players here; some exciting players who can change games in a moment.

“Going into the tournament, we’re full of confidence, especially with the friendlies we’ve played against some of the best teams in the world. We’ve mixed it against them and I think there’s definitely going to be a good tournament from this England squad.

“When we eventually get out to Russia, the togetherness and team spirit we have shown so far will take us a long way in the tournament.”

Arduino Just Introduced an FPGA Board, Announces Debugging and Better Software

Arduino Just Introduced an FPGA Board, Announces Debugging and Better Software

Arduino has announced a bevy of new boards that bring modern features and modern chips to the Arduino ecosystem.

Most ambitious of these new offerings is a board that combines a fast ARM microcontroller, WiFi, Bluetooth, and an FPGA. All this is wrapped in a package that provides Mini HDMI out and pins for a PCIe-Express slot. They’re calling it the Arduino MKR Vidor 4000.

Bringing an FPGA to the Arduino ecosystem is on the list of the most interesting advances in DIY electronics in recent memory, and there’s a lot to unpack here. FPGA development boards aren’t new. You can find crates of them hidden in the storage closet of any University’s electronics lab. If you want to buy an FPGA dev board, the Terasic DE10 is a good starter bundle, the iCEstick has an Open Source toolchain, and this one has pink soldermask. With the release of the MKR Vidor, the goal for Arduino isn’t just to release a board with an FPGA; the goal is to release a tool that allows anyone to use an FPGA.

The key to democratizing FPGA development is Arduino’s work with the Arduino Create ecosystem. Arduino Create is the company’s online IDE that gives everyone the ability to share projects and upload code with Over-the-Air updates. The MKR Vidor will launch with integration to the Arduino Create ecosystem that includes a visual editor to work with the pre-compiled IP for the FPGA. That’s not to say you can’t just plug your own VHDL into this board and get it working; that’s still possible. But Arduino would like to create a system where anyone can move blocks of IP around with a tool that’s easy for beginners.

A Facelift for the Uno WiFi

First up is the brand new Arduino Uno WiFi. While there have been other boards bearing the name ‘Arduino Uno WiFi’ over the years, a lot has changed in the world of tiny radio modules and 8-bit microcontrollers over the past few years. The new Arduino Uno WiFi is powered by a new 8-bit AVR, the ATMega4809. The ATMega4809 is a new part announced just a few months ago, and is just about what you would expect from the next-generation 8-bit Arduino; it runs at 20MHz, has 48 kB of Flash, 6 kB of SRAM, and it comes in a 48-pin package. The ATMega4809 is taking a few lattices of silicon out of Microchip’s playbook and adds Custom Configurable Logic. The CCL in the new ATMega is a peripheral that is kinda, sorta like a CPLD on chip. If you’ve ever had something that could be more easily done with logic gates than software, the CCL is the tool for the job.

But a new 8-bit microcontroller doesn’t make a WiFi-enabled Arduino. The wireless power behind the new Arduino comes from a custom ESP-32 based module from u-blox. There’s also a tiny crypto chip (Microchip’s ATECC508A) so the Uno WiFi will work with AWS. The Arduino Uno WiFi will be available this June.

But this isn’t the only announcement from the Arduino org today. They’ve been hard at work on some killer features for a while now, and now they’re finally ready for release. What’s the big news? Debuggers. Real debuggers for the Arduino that are easy to use. There are also new boards aimed at Arduino’s IoT strategy.

The Future of Arduino

As you would expect in the world of embedded development, the future is IoT. Last week, Arduino announced the release of two new boards, the MKR WiFi 1010 and the MKR NB 1500. The MKR WiFi 1010 features a SAMD21 Cortex-M0+ microcontroller and a u-blox module (again featuring an ESP-32) giving the board WiFi. The MKR NB 1500 is designed for cellular networks and features the same SAMD21 Cortex-M0+ microcontroller found in the MKR WiFi 1010, but also adds a u-blox cellular module that will connect to LTE networks using Narrowband IoT, but the module does also support Cat M1 networks.

But IoT isn’t the only thing Arduino has been working on. On the leadup to the World Maker Faire this weekend, I had the opportunity to speak with Fabio Violante, CEO of Arduino, and Massimo Banzi, Co-founder of Arduino, and what I heard was remarkable. There’s going to be an update to the Arduino IDE soon, and real debugging is coming to the Arduino ecosystem. This is a significant development in Arduino’s software efforts, and when Fabio was appointed CEO last July, this was the first thing he wanted to do.

Also on deck for upcoming bits of hardware is a slow upgrade from ARM Cortex-M0 parts to Cortex-M4 parts. While this change isn’t exactly overdue, it is a direct result of the ever-increasing power of available microcontrollers. The reason for this change is the growing need for more compute power on embedded platforms, and simply the fact that more powerful chips are cheaper now.

Massimo, Fabio, and the rest of the Arduino team will be showing off their latest wares at Maker Faire Bay Area this weekend, and we will be posting updates. The FPGA Arduino — the MKR Vidor 4000 — will be on display running a computer vision demo, and there will, of course, be fancy new boards on hand. We’ll be posting updates so keep your eye on our site!

‘Monster Hunter: Generations Ultimate’ arrives on Switch August 28th

The Switch is getting its own Monster Hunter game this summer, but unfortunately, it won’t be the record-selling current-gen version, World. Last summer, Nintendo launched Monster Hunter XX, a port of a 2016 3DS title, in Japan — and now it’s on its way to American shores. Monster Hunter: Generations Ultimate comes out for Switch in the US on August 28th.

While it’s not as pretty as World, Monster Hunter: Generations Ultimate has a few tricks of its own, like Hunter Styles and a mode that lets you take on beasts as the fierce(ly adorable) Felynes (they’re only Palicoes when they accompany players). If you’ve already played it on 3DS, you can transfer your save data from Monster Hunter: Generations over to the Switch version. The game also supports local and online multiplayer, which is a pretty notable feature for a generation that’s largely dismissed couch co-op.

Google: Duplex phone calling AI will identify itself

After an impressive Google I/O demo where its Duplex AI system called a restaurant and salon to set up appointments, one of the big questions concerned the ethics of the technology. The Google Assistant voice took steps to pretend to be human, inserting “umms” and “ahs” into the conversation while a person on the other end appeared to be unaware that they were talking to a program. As a Turing Test candidate, it was impressive, but we’d like to know if the “person” who just called us has a heartbeat and a favorite One Direction member.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson said “transparency” is a key part of the technology and: “We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and we’ll make sure the system is appropriately identified.” We’ll see what that looks like when the Duplex technology rolls out in testing as a part of Google Assistant this summer.

Google:

We understand and value the discussion around Google Duplex — as we’ve said from the beginning, transparency in the technology is important. We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and we’ll make sure the system is appropriately identified. What we showed at I/O was an early technology demo, and we look forward to incorporating feedback as we develop this into a product.
